Novo Nordisk supports India’s mission to end sickle cell disease by 2047
Novo Nordisk has pledged support for India’s national mission to eliminate sickle cell disease by 2047. The Danish pharmaceutical company emphasized the necessity of improving early diagnosis, public awareness, healthcare infrastructure, and treatment access to combat the genetic disorder.
Habib Bennaceur, Senior Vice President of the Rare Disease Unit at Novo Nordisk, noted that India represents a significant portion of the global burden of sickle cell disease. The condition is a chronic single-gene disorder that affects red blood cell shape, limiting oxygen transport and potentially leading to anemia, organ damage, strokes, and severe pain crises.
