Wegovy weight-loss tablets to launch in Germany this September

Novo Nordisk is set to launch the oral version of its weight-loss medication, Wegovy, in Germany on September 1. The pill contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient used in the existing Wegovy injections, but requires a significantly higher dose because only a small fraction of the peptide is absorbed through the digestive tract.

The medication is approved for adults with obesity or overweight accompanied by at least one weight-related condition. In Germany, patients must obtain a prescription from a doctor. Currently, these treatments are classified as lifestyle drugs, meaning health insurance typically does not cover the costs, though discussions regarding coverage for specific high-risk groups are ongoing.

Medical experts have raised concerns regarding the rise of dubious online providers offering weight-loss pills without proper medical supervision. Doctors warn that a lack of professional guidance could lead to malnutrition, muscle loss, or misuse by individuals with eating disorders. While the pill offers more convenience than weekly injections, it requires strict daily administration on an empty stomach.

Following the EU approval in July, a gradual rollout is expected across EU member states. While a specific date for Austria has not yet been confirmed, experts suggest a similar availability to Germany in the coming months.
