Novo Nordisk Wegovy reduces liver fat to normal levels in obesity study

Analysis from the STEP UP clinical trial indicates that Wegovy (semaglutide) significantly improves liver health in adults with obesity. Data presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) annual meeting in Milan shows that after 72 weeks of treatment with 7.2 mg and 2.4 mg doses, most participants with elevated liver fat saw substantial improvements.

Among participants whose liver fat exceeded 5% at the start of the study, 88.5% achieved normal levels (below 5%) by week 72. Measurements using MRI-PDFF showed that the average liver fat fraction decreased from 8.8% at baseline to 3.1% by the end of the 72-week period, representing a reduction of approximately two-thirds. The study also noted that even participants who began with lower levels of liver fat experienced improvements in liver health.

Medical experts suggest these findings indicate that semaglutide may assist in managing liver disease at an early stage, potentially preventing more serious long-term complications involving the heart, kidneys, and metabolic health.
