Novo Nordisk's Wegovy oral tablet receives EU approval

The European Commission has granted marketing authorisation for Wegovy pill – a 25 mg oral semaglutide tablet from Novo Nordisk – for adults with obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m²) or overweight (BMI ≥ 27 kg/m²) who have at least one weight‑related comorbidity. The decision follows a positive CHMP opinion and is based on the Phase 3 Oasis 4 trial, which showed an average weight loss of about 17 % after 64 weeks, with one‑third of participants losing ≥ 20 % and a 20 % reduction in major cardiovascular events.

The tablet must be taken once daily on an empty stomach with up to 120 ml of water, followed by a 30‑minute wait before eating or taking other medicines, and is intended to be used together with a reduced‑calorie diet and increased physical activity. It is the first oral GLP‑1 receptor agonist approved for weight management in Europe, with launch expected in the second half of 2026. UK health‑care providers have issued guidance on titration, side‑effect management and the importance of clinical oversight when switching from the injectable form.
