Novo Progresso sees decline in Bolsonaro campaigning amid coup investigation

In Novo Progresso, Pará, pro-Bolsonaro campaigning has significantly diminished following legal actions taken by the Prosecutor General's Office. Nine residents are facing charges for their alleged involvement in coup-related activities following the 2022 election defeat of Jair Bolsonaro.

The Prosecutor General's Office denounced the suspects to the Supreme Federal Court on August 24, following an investigation by the Federal Police. The group is accused of criminal association and attempting the violent abolition of the democratic state of law. The investigation focuses on incidents from November 2022, when protesters blocked the BR-163 highway for seven days, involving attacks against Federal Highway Police officers.

Local political figures noted a shift in the municipal landscape. While the region previously showed overwhelming support for Bolsonaro, current mobilization is described as stalled, partly due to the local mayor's alignment with different political groups.
