Novodnistrovsk reservoir water levels drop rapidly
The water level in the Novodnistrovsk reservoir is dropping at an accelerated rate due to extremely low water inflow from the upper basin of the Dniester River. Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder reported that the water level fell by 45 centimeters in less than two weeks, dropping from 111.83 meters on September 1 to 111.38 meters.
Between September 1 and September 13, the average inflow to the reservoir was 22.7 cubic meters per second, while outflows were maintained at 60 cubic meters per second. This imbalance is attributed to insufficient precipitation in the upper Dniester basin, located in Ukraine; recent rainfall in Moldova has not been enough to mitigate the situation.
The Nistrean Commission is scheduled to meet on Monday, September 14, to analyze the hydrological situation and determine necessary emergency measures.
