Novokuybyshevsk oil refinery hit by drone attack in Russia

A major fire broke out at the Rosneft-owned Novokuybyshevsk oil refinery in Russia’s Samara region following a drone attack on the morning of October 30. Local reports and monitoring channels, including Astra and Exilenova+, documented multiple explosions and thick plumes of black smoke rising from the facility. The refinery has an annual processing capacity of approximately 8.8 million metric tons of crude oil and produces critical products including diesel, gasoline, and aviation fuel used by the Russian military.

The attack follows reports from The Wall Street Journal suggesting that Ukraine had informally suspended strikes on Russian energy infrastructure due to pressure from the United States. According to those reports, the pause was intended to last until after the U.S. midterm elections on November 3, following requests from President Donald Trump to avoid volatility in global fuel prices. However, the strike indicates a resumption of such operations.

In separate developments, Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities resulted in one death and one injury in Kyiv, while a shopping center in Kharkiv was also hit, causing injuries. Regional authorities in Samara declared a drone threat early in the morning, and local airport operations were suspended due to the incident.
