Nowy Sącz commemorates 84th anniversary of ghetto liquidation

Commemorations were held in Nowy Sącz to mark the 84th anniversary of the liquidation of the city's ghetto. A memorial service took place at the Holocaust Victims Square to honor the Jewish residents murdered by German occupiers.

The ghetto, established in August 1940, housed approximately 18,000 people at its peak, including residents from the surrounding region and cities such as Kraków, Lwów, and Łódź. Following a period of extreme overcrowding, hunger, and repression, the liquidation began in August 1942. On August 23, residents were gathered near the Dunajec River before being deported to the Bełżec extermination camp. The final transport left Nowy Sącz on August 28, 1942, marking the end of a Jewish community that had co-existed in the city for three centuries.
