Nowy Sącz fatal accident linked to illegal street racing

A 21-year-old driver has been arrested and temporarily detained following a fatal accident in Nowy Sącz, where a 50-year-old man was struck and killed while crossing a pedestrian walkway with his dog.

Investigators from the District Prosecutor's Office in Nowy Sącz determined that the driver of a Volkswagen Passat was participating in an illegal street race with a BMW. The Volkswagen was traveling at a speed of at least 120 km/h in a zone where the limit is 60 km/h. The vehicle bypassed a car that had stopped to yield to the pedestrian, striking the man on a marked crossing.

A second driver, a 20-year-old resident of the region driving a BMW, has also been detained for suspected involvement in the illegal race. The 21-year-old driver faces charges of causing a fatal accident through gross speeding and participating in illegal racing. While he admitted to the collision and expressed remorse, he has refused to provide further explanations to prosecutors.
