Nowy Targ faces decline in local retail as discount chains expand
Local commerce is facing a decline in the center of Nowy Targ, Poland, as traditional shops struggle to find tenants. More than 20 commercial premises currently remain vacant in the city center.
This trend is attributed to the expansion of large discount chains and retail parks, as well as the rise of e-commerce. The city now hosts five Biedronka locations and three Lidl markets, alongside other major retailers such as Kaufland, Netto, and Aldi. Long-standing local businesses, including a hardware store that operated for 35 years, have recently closed, reflecting a broader shift in consumer habits toward large-format retail and shopping malls.
