NPCI launches campaign to warn Indian users about text message scams

India's National Payments Corporation (NPCI) has launched an awareness drive urging consumers to recognise and avoid fraudulent SMS messages that impersonate banks, government agencies, delivery firms or telecom providers. The campaign outlines five common actions scammers seek – clicking malicious links, calling fake helplines, downloading unknown apps, sharing OTPs or passwords, and transferring money – and advises users to verify requests through official channels, never share credentials, install apps only from trusted stores, and report suspicious messages to authorities.

NPCI stresses that careful reading of messages, checking bank statements, and recording any suspicious interactions can help protect the growing digital‑payments ecosystem in the country.
