NPDWAG urges pesticide users to protect drinking water

The National Pesticides and Drinking Water Action Group (NPDWAG) is urging pesticide users in Wexford and Cork to maintain vigilance as the primary spraying window concludes. Officials warn that even a single drop of pesticide can contaminate a drinking water source, noting that risks remain high during the autumn months due to wetter weather conditions.

Since the NPDWAG was established in 2017, pesticide exceedances in Ireland have decreased by more than 50%. Dr. Aidan Moody of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine emphasized the importance of following correct application methods and considering whether pesticide use is necessary to protect both water supplies and biodiversity.

Dr. Patrick O’Sullivan of Uisce Éireann highlighted that detections can still occur outside the main spraying season. Users are advised to follow product labels, maintain buffer zones near watercourses, ensure proper storage and disposal of containers, and avoid application if rain is forecasted within 48 hours.
