NPO employees protest decision to participate in Eurovision
More than 400 employees of the Dutch public broadcasting organization (NPO) have issued an open letter, titled #NietMijnSongfestival, protesting the decision to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest. The employees expressed that they cannot accept a desire to participate in an entertainment program being prioritized over the lives of people being killed in ongoing conflicts, specifically citing concerns regarding Israel's participation.
The protest follows a previous decision by AVROTROS to withdraw from the contest due to concerns over violence, attacks on press freedom, and political interference. While the NPO maintains that participation can contribute to “connection,” employees and several broadcasting organizations, including BNNVARA, EO, and VPRO, are demanding clarity regarding decision-making, financing, and the organization of the Dutch entry.
NPO spokespersons stated they remain in dialogue with all parties involved but have not yet provided detailed explanations regarding the specific decision-making process or the composition of the upcoming contest team.
