NPS celebrates 80 years of political history in Suriname
The National Party of Suriname (NPS) is celebrating its 80th anniversary, marking eight decades of political involvement and governance in the country. Founded on September 29, 1946, the NPS is one of Suriname’s oldest active political organizations.
During the commemoration held at Independence Square, NPS Chairman Gregory Rusland described the party as ‘the light in the tunnel in Surinamese politics.’ He emphasized the party's resilience through challenging times and credited its longevity to its organizational structures. Rusland noted that while the political landscape has changed and the NPS is no longer the sole dominant force, the party remains committed to its core values.
The party's history is tied to prominent figures, including founder Johan Ferrier, who became Suriname’s first president, and Johan Adolf Pengel, a former Prime Minister. The anniversary celebrations reflect on the party's role in Suriname's transition toward self-governance and its historical influence in various coalition governments.
