Népszava acquired by Liberty Press Kft

Liberty Press Kft. has acquired the Hungarian newspaper Népszava from XXI. század Média Zrt. as part of a larger media acquisition. This move aims to ensure the long-term survival of the publication following significant financial difficulties.

As part of the transition, Balázs Vető, founder of the Forrás Social Research Institute, will take over as CEO. Gábor Horváth has been appointed as the interim editor-in-chief to lead the editorial staff during the upcoming restructuring period. The previous editor-in-chief, Péter Németh, will no longer hold the position.

The acquisition follows a period of instability for the publication. In May, Mediaworks terminated its contract with Népszava due to accumulated debts related to printing and distribution, which led to the suspension of the newspaper's traditional print edition. The outlet has since focused on its digital presence via anepszava.hu and a mobile application.
