NRL boss Peter V’landys proposes rule to boost global expansion

National Rugby League chief Peter V’landys has outlined a proposal to allow a single attacking kick or forward pass to an off‑side receiver during each six‑tackle set. The change is intended to make the 13‑aside code more attractive to overseas audiences, with Europe and the United States identified as potential franchise locations by 2050.

V’landys argues that the existing precision of NRL halfbacks could be leveraged by permitting one off‑side kick per set, giving teams a deeper attacking option. He also notes that streaming partner DAZN, which reaches about 100 million subscribers, could broadcast the sport globally from cities such as New York, London or Miami. While urging this innovation for international growth, he cautions that domestic focus should remain on Australia’s traditional Barassi Line dividing rugby league and union support.
