NRL nears $57M deal to rescue English Super League

The National Rugby League (NRL) is nearing a $57 million deal to invest in the English Super League to prevent the competition from facing bankruptcy. Under the proposed five-year agreement, the NRL would acquire a 10% stake in the Super League annually, aiming to control half of the European competition by approximately 2031.

Ten of the 14 top-flight English clubs, including powerhouses such as Wigan, St Helens, Leeds, and Hull FC, are reportedly supporting the bid. NRL CEO Peter V’Landys emphasized the importance of a strong English presence for the health of the international game. The investment is intended to bolster infrastructure and leverage the NRL brand to secure more lucrative television rights.

Separately, within the current Super League landscape, Bradford Bulls head coach Kurt Haggerty addressed the possibility of the league expanding to 15 teams. Haggerty also noted the club's struggle to avoid finishing at the bottom of the table amidst a significant injury crisis, though relegation is not an immediate threat due to new IMG grading structures.
