NRL to trial new kick-off rule in Broncos vs. Storm match

The NRL will trial a new kick-off rule during the match between the Brisbane Broncos and Melbourne Storm at Suncorp Stadium. Under the proposed experiment, the team that concedes points will have the option to either kick off or receive the football upon resumption.

To prevent game delays, decisions regarding the rule will be made by players on the field rather than coaches. The referee will ask the team captain for their decision immediately, similar to a captain’s challenge, leaving no time for coaching input via trainers.

Club officials from both Melbourne and Brisbane expressed support for the change, noting that it empowers on-field leaders and avoids unnecessary stoppages. The rule is intended to potentially reduce scoring blowouts by allowing the conceding team to shift momentum.
