SPD Fraktionschef Matthias Miersch Rejects Calls for Leadership Change
SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch said there is no reason for a personnel change in the Social Democratic Party, describing the party as well‑positioned and capable of generating its own initiatives. He dismissed internal criticism that party chairs Lars Klingbeil and Bärbel Bas hold ministerial posts while also leading the SPD, noting that such dual roles have existed for a long time and have both advantages and disadvantages.
The SPD district in Bielefeld had urged Klingbeil and Bas to choose between the party chairmanship and their ministerial offices, arguing that clear separation is needed for credible renewal. Miersch also said he hopes recent criticism within the CDU of Chancellor and party leader Friedrich Merz’s personnel decisions will not create further unrest and that the decisions will bring more stability to the governing coalition.
