Herbert Reul says releasing dangerous suspects is unacceptable
North Rhine‑Westphalia interior minister Herbert Reul (CDU) warned that releasing individuals classified as "Gefährder" – dangerous suspects – cannot be tolerated. Speaking after the Islamist‑motivated attack on Berlin’s Christopher Street Day (CSD) parade, Reul said, "Das kann so nicht weitergehen" and stressed that once charges are filed, "man kann sich eigentlich nicht erlauben, ihn auf freien Fuß zu setzen." He called for faster judicial procedures and suggested deportation as an option for those deemed too dangerous.
Reul noted that NRW currently has 48 dangerous individuals without German citizenship, many holding dual nationality, and questioned their willingness to accept German constitutional principles. He criticised the lack of concrete consequences after previous attacks, saying that proposals often remain only on paper.
The minister’s remarks aim to tighten security policy and address public concerns about the handling of extremist suspects in Germany.
