NS expands discount deals to ease peak hour train congestion

The Dutch railway operator NS is expanding its 'PrijsTijd Deals' to offer discounted train tickets for travelers willing to journey slightly outside of peak hours. This initiative aims to better distribute passenger loads during the busy September period, which the company identifies as its busiest month, particularly during the 'hyperspikes' occurring on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

To qualify for the discounts, passengers must purchase their tickets at least one day in advance. The deals apply to selected trains on the edges of peak hours that have sufficient capacity. NS suggests that even a small shift in travel time can significantly impact comfort; for example, if only 6 percent of passengers on a specific Sprinter service from Den Haag Mariahoeve to Leiden Centraal shifted their departure by 15 minutes, seating availability would improve for everyone on both trains.

Tijmen Voet, Director of Timetabling at NS, compared the congestion to peak loads on an electricity grid, noting that a small percentage of travelers choosing less crowded alternatives can prevent many others from having to stand.
