NS simplifies strike compensation by removing alternative transport reimbursements
NS is consolidating its compensation policies for passengers affected by train strikes into a single system. The company is removing the option for travelers to claim actual costs for alternative transport, such as taxis or buses, which was previously available alongside the ‘Money Back for Delay’ scheme.
Under the new terms, passengers can claim a maximum of 25 euros per day for missed trips without checking in, but the reimbursement of specific alternative transport costs will no longer be provided. NS stated that the previous dual-system was complex, labor-intensive, and prone to abuse. During strikes in June 2025, NS received approximately 180,000 claims for alternative transport totaling 4 million euros, of which 2.8 million euros were approved. The company noted that verifying these claims caused significant administrative delays.
While the compensation for alternative transport is being reduced, Locov, a consultative body for consumer organizations, noted that NS’s remaining policies remain more generous than European passenger regulations require. Additionally, NS has decided not to implement a previously announced ban on placing bags on empty seats, following feedback that the rule was too strict.
