NS to increase Dutch train ticket prices by 4.7 percent in 2027

The Dutch railway operator NS has announced that train ticket prices and most subscriptions will increase by an average of 4.7 percent starting in January 2027. Daan Schut, the board member responsible for tariffs, stated that the increases are necessary to fund the purchase of new trains, cover rising costs, and invest in facilities.

To mitigate the impact on travelers, NS will offer larger discounts during off-peak hours. The maximum discount for ‘PrijsTijd Deals’ will increase from 60 to 80 percent, and these deals will be expanded to include same-day travel throughout 2027. Certain products, such as Railrunner tickets for children and the Kids Vrij subscription, will maintain their current pricing.

However, the travelers' organization Rover has expressed disappointment regarding the hike. Director Daan Zieren criticized the additional one percent ‘catch-up indexation’ above inflation and called the increase in the minimum fare for short trips to 3.10 euros ‘unnecessary and discouraging.’ Rover noted that while the expansion of same-day discounts is a positive development, the price increases may hinder passenger growth.
