NS train delayed between Meppel and Zwolle after smoke reported

On Saturday evening an Intercity Nieuwe Generatie (ICNG) train operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) traveling from Groningen to Zwolle reported smoke and a burning smell near Meppel. The train reduced speed and applied an emergency brake, coming to a stop near the Spoordijk at Staphorst. After about fifteen minutes the situation was under control and the train continued to Zwolle without further problems.

The incident caused limited delays of less than ten minutes on other services between Meppel and Zwolle. The cause of the smoke was not identified. The ICNG is the new intercity rolling stock that is gradually replacing the older Koploper trains.
