NSCDC and traders clash at Jos market over sanitation enforcement

A confrontation between operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and traders at Chorbe Market in Jos North, Plateau State, resulted in one injury and damage to several vehicles on Thursday.

The dispute reportedly began when NSCDC personnel, invited by market traders’ association officials to enforce a weekly sanitation exercise, encountered resistance from roadside traders. These traders argued that their shops were located outside the main market and that they were not subject to the association's enforcement rules.

The disagreement escalated into a heated confrontation, during which a trader was shot and injured. While accounts regarding the shooting vary, the injured individual was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. The unrest caused panic in surrounding areas, including Apata, Alikazaure, and Katako, leading residents to flee their homes. The Plateau State NSCDC command has stated that the incident is currently under investigation.
