NSCIA calls for Nigerian security reforms and national unity

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has called for urgent and comprehensive reforms to the nation’s security architecture. In a communiqué issued following its General Assembly at the Abuja National Mosque, the Council emphasized the need for professionalism, accountability, constitutional safeguards, and respect for fundamental human rights.

The NSCIA expressed support for decentralized policing, provided such reforms include sustainable funding, impartiality, and effective coordination between federal and state security institutions. The Council noted that insecurity impacts all Nigerians regardless of faith and explicitly rejected claims of genocide against Christians or any other religious community in the country.

Addressing economic concerns, the Council urged the Federal Government to implement measures to reduce the costs of food and transportation to alleviate widespread hardship. Additionally, the NSCIA condemned efforts to portray Muslims as non-indigenous to Igboland, asserting that Islam has been present in the region for many generations. The Council also called for religious unity, urging scholars to avoid public attacks on one another and cautioning against the manipulation of religion to promote hatred or violence.
