NSE Closing Auction Session turnover hits Rs 39,718 crore

India’s National Stock Exchange (NSE) recorded a turnover of Rs 39,718 crore during its first major index rebalancing day under the new Closing Auction Session (CAS) mechanism. The session, which coincided with the MSCI August 2026 Index Review, accounted for 22% of the NSE's total cash market turnover and saw participation from over 98,000 investors.

Introduced by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the CAS replaces the previous volume-weighted average price mechanism. Instead of relying on trades from the final 30 minutes of continuous trading, the new system matches buy and sell orders at a single equilibrium price. This change is intended to improve price discovery and transparency by preventing large institutional orders from disproportionately influencing closing prices.

During its first month of operation, the NSE recorded a cumulative CAS turnover of Rs 63,000 crore, maintaining a market share of 98.2% for the mechanism.
