NSML completes sea-time training for 272 maritime cadets

NLNG Shipping and Marine Services Limited (NSML) has announced that 272 cadets have completed sea-time training through its Seafarers Continuous Development Programme. An additional 54 cadets are currently progressing toward professional certification.

Speaking at the 2026 Maritime Training Summit in Lagos, officials noted that the initiative aims to address the shortage of internationally certified seafarers in Africa. The program seeks to reduce reliance on expatriate personnel by providing practical sea-time experience, which is often a barrier to professional certification for local maritime professionals.

The Maritime Centre of Excellence on Bonny Island utilizes simulators for training in vessel operations, navigation, and emergency response. Supported by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, NSML plans to expand the center’s facilities and introduce more courses to establish Nigeria as a maritime training hub for West Africa.
