NSRI rescues Australian Shepherd swept out to sea in Gqeberha

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) successfully rescued an Australian Shepherd named Bean after he was swept approximately 500 metres offshore at Pollock Beach in Gqeberha. The incident occurred on a Saturday afternoon when the dog broke free from his leash during a walk and was caught in strong rip currents.

NSRI crew members launched the Rescue 6 Alpha craft, and Coastal Water Rescue swimmers responded to the scene. Local lifeguards and a Good Samaritan on a rescue board also assisted in the operation. A rescue swimmer entered the water to secure Bean, who was showing signs of hypothermia, and brought him safely aboard the craft.

Rescuers used blankets to keep the dog warm during the transit back to shore. Because Bean’s collar contained a contact number, his owners were able to meet the rescue team at the NSRI Gqeberha station, resulting in an emotional reunion. The dog has since been recovering at home under the care of his owners.
