Nsugbe community elects Chief Nzekwesili John Nweke as new Igwe

The Nsugbe community in Anambra East, Anambra State, has elected Chief Nzekwesili John Nweke, Esq, as its new Igwe. The election, which followed the zoning of the traditional stool to Ivite village, was met with jubilation by community members.

The election process involved a transition from a delegate system to an all-inclusive voting process for eligible persons in Ivite, following the suspension of the Nsugbe Town Union by the Anambra State Government on August 24, 2026. A government-constituted caretaker committee, led by Victor Attah, oversaw the process to restore peace and ensure the community's wishes were met.

Government officials have dismissed allegations of political interference. The Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Vincent Ezeaka, stated that the state government acted only as an observer while the community conducted the election. Similarly, media representatives for the State Attorney General, Tobechukwu Nweke, denied claims of his involvement, describing such allegations as a ‘false alarm’ and noting that the community remains calm.
