ABVP sweeps DUSU elections as NSUI suffers total defeat

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) secured a dominant victory in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections, winning three of the four central panel posts. The Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) suffered a complete washout, failing to win a single seat for the first time since 2015. A study by the Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation noted a sharp decline in NSUI’s vote share, dropping from 35.79 percent to 23.39 percent over two years.

Newly elected DUSU Vice-President Deepanshu Shokeen, who ran as an independent after being denied an NSUI ticket, attributed the NSUI’s failure to internal politics and criticized AICC in-charge Kanhaiya Kumar for poor organizational strategy and candidate selection. Shokeen also led a protest at the university’s North Campus to demand the expedited expansion of student hostels following a fatal building collapse in Satya Niketan.

The NSUI’s performance has prompted internal scrutiny within the Congress party. Leadership is reportedly reviewing campaign strategies and candidate management, as the defeat coincides with a perceived lack of influence among the student population.
