NSUI protests in Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner
The National Students Union of India (NSUI) held protests in Delhi's Connaught Place, specifically near Rajiv Chowk metro station, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The demonstrations were centered on allegations of electoral irregularities and ‘vote theft.’
During the protests, Delhi Police detained NSUI national president Vinod Jakhar and numerous other activists. Tensions escalated into physical altercations, with viral videos appearing to show female NSUI members and female police officers engaging in scuffles, including hair-pulling and slapping, inside a police transport bus. NSUI leaders have condemned the police conduct as “barbaric,” while Congress leaders have criticized the treatment of detained students.
In response to the unrest, members of the INDIA Bloc, including leaders from the CPI(M), announced plans to continue political agitation alongside legal challenges in the Supreme Court to ensure the accountability of constitutional institutions. Meanwhile, a separate controversy emerged regarding a viral video; while some opposition figures claimed it showed fake police in Delhi, a West Bengal police recruit clarified the footage actually depicted new recruits in West Bengal receiving their uniforms.
