NSUI protests in Delhi lead to CISF constable stabbing and 18 arrests
Tensions escalated in New Delhi following a protest by the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The demonstrations, centered on alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, turned violent on Monday near Parliament Street and Jantar Mantar.
During the unrest, a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) constable, identified as Bikram Kumar, was allegedly stabbed with a knife while attempting to move a protester away from a barricade. The officer sustained a minor injury to his right elbow and was treated at RML Hospital. Delhi Police have registered four FIRs involving charges of rioting, defacement, and obstruction of public servants, and have arrested 18 individuals in connection with the violence.
The controversy regarding the SIR and the Chief Election Commissioner has reached the Supreme Court, which has issued notices to the Election Commission and the central government seeking responses. This follows previous demonstrations where clashes between police and protesters resulted in injuries to several personnel and the detention of approximately 110 individuals.
