NSW Advances Great Koala National Park Amid Rally Access Concerns

The New South Wales Government has submitted the proposed Great Koala National Park to the Clean Energy Regulator for approval under the Improved Forest Management carbon‑credit scheme. The plan would permanently cease logging on 176,000 hectares of state forest, linking with existing parks to create a 476,000‑hectare reserve that safeguards more than 12,000 koalas, 36,000 greater gliders and numerous other threatened species. Approved ACCUs are intended to be allocated to targeted manufacturing industries in the state.

Motorsport Australia has signaled concern that the rezoning could affect rally stages, testing sites and club events that traditionally use state forest land. The body is consulting with government officials and has lodged formal submissions to maintain public‑land access for motorsport, urging rally participants to register their interest on the government portal. Both initiatives highlight the balance between conservation, carbon‑credit opportunities, regional economic benefits and community sport access.
