NSW and ACT to enforce double demerit points over Labour Day weekend
Authorities in New South Wales (NSW) and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) will enforce double demerit points during the Labour Day long weekend, from Friday, October 2, to Monday, October 5.
While monetary fines remain unchanged, drivers face increased point penalties for various offenses. For instance, using a mobile phone while driving—including holding it or placing it on one's lap—will result in 10 demerit points. Other offenses subject to double demerits include speeding, failing to wear a seatbelt correctly, and riding a motorcycle without a helmet.
In NSW and the ACT, drivers with full licenses can accumulate a maximum of 13 points before their license is suspended, with records remaining active for three years. Authorities also cautioned motorists regarding passenger behavior, noting that registered owners may be penalized if passengers fail to wear seatbelts. A report from the NRMA indicated that passengers are responsible for 62 percent of seatbelt violations, and 33 percent of drivers continue to operate vehicles even when a passenger is not properly buckled.
