NSW corrections officers strike over inmate release

Corrections officers across New South Wales have launched a 24-hour strike, walking off the job at 30 prisons and hundreds of courts. The industrial action follows the release of an inmate from the John Morony Correctional Centre who is accused of a violent assault on a guard.

The Public Service Association (PSA) reported that the alleged attack left an officer with life-changing injuries, including a broken nose, a broken eye socket, and missing teeth. The strike was triggered after the inmate was granted bail on other matters without being charged for the alleged assault.

The walkout has caused significant disruptions to the judicial system. In Wollongong Local Court, proceedings were delayed as staff could not facilitate prisoner appearances via video link. Prisoners have been placed in lockdown, and transport trucks for court appearances have been turned back.

PSA General Secretary Stewart Little described the situation as “outrageous,” arguing that corrections officers deserve the same legal protections as members of the public. Corrective Services NSW stated they have a “zero-tolerance” approach to staff assaults and confirmed the incident is under police investigation.
