NSW EPA seeks feedback on regional waste and recycling plan
The New South Wales Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has launched a six-week public consultation period for Chapter 2 of its Waste and Circular Infrastructure Plan. The draft plan aims to improve recycling capabilities and address landfill capacity constraints specifically within regional New South Wales.
Asela Atapattu, EPA Executive Director of Policy, Programs and Finance, stated the plan seeks to ensure residents can participate in a circular economy regardless of their location. The draft identifies several critical issues facing regional areas, including underinvestment in infrastructure, capacity shortages, and the high costs associated with transporting and recycling materials.
Proposed solutions include the development of regional waste plans, enhanced data collection, and the streamlining of planning processes. The EPA noted that while many regional councils provide effective services, waste generation in certain areas is currently outpacing local infrastructure planning. Public feedback is being sought from regional councils, industry representatives, and community members until November 30, 2026.
