NSW Government cancels Sydney train timetable changes

The New South Wales government has abandoned planned changes to the T4, T8, and South Coast rail timetables following significant backlash from commuters, local communities, and Members of Parliament. The changes, which were scheduled to begin on November 15, were intended to increase service frequency and capacity in southern Sydney and the South Coast.

However, the proposed schedule would have increased commute times for many passengers. For example, travelers on the T4 line between Waterfall and the city center faced potential delays of up to 14 minutes due to additional stops. Passengers from Heathcote, Engadine, and Loftus would have seen morning and evening peak travel times increase by approximately 12 to 14 minutes.

Premier Chris Minns stated that the decision was made to prioritize service reliability. Transport Minister John Graham noted that the government will instead focus on a $2.1 billion investment in rail maintenance, signaling, and incident response to improve the performance of the existing heavy rail network.
