NSW Government inquiry reveals systemic issues in university sector
A New South Wales Government inquiry has identified systemic issues within the state’s university sector, warning that significant governance reform is required to protect public institutions. The Standing Committee on Social Issues released a final report detailing widespread concerns, including governance failures, declining transparency, and an increasing concentration of power within university management.
Committee chair Dr. Sarah Kaine stated that issues such as controversial spending, high executive salaries, an overreliance on consultants, and worsening workplace culture are symptoms of deeper structural problems rather than isolated incidents. The inquiry, which included public hearings and submissions from staff, students, and experts, highlighted the risks of growing corporatisation and the weakening of staff and student voices.
The report follows an interim finding that specifically flagged failings at the University of Wollongong and the University of Technology Sydney. It called for further scrutiny of the University of Wollongong’s commercial activities and overseas operations, as well as its handling of staff cuts related to a 2025 restructuring.
