NSW government proposes high-rise towers for Sydney's eastern suburbs

The New South Wales government has unveiled draft plans to add 9,400 new homes to Sydney’s eastern suburbs, featuring high-rise towers up to 34 storeys tall. The proposal focuses on increasing housing supply near transport hubs, specifically around Edgecliff station and a planned new station in Woollahra.

The 20-year development plan covers 168 hectares and includes seven new parks, nine kilometres of walking and cycling paths, and a new local centre in Woollahra. The government aims to ensure a diversity of apartment sizes, with 40 per cent of the new homes located within 200 metres of a train station.

Premier Chris Minns stated that the plan aims to prevent Sydney’s growth from being pushed solely to the urban fringe, arguing that established suburbs near jobs and services must contribute to housing needs. However, the plan faces opposition from the Woollahra Council. Mayor Sarah Dixson has criticized the proposal, and the council has offered an alternative plan to deliver 3,600 units instead of the government’s much larger scale.
