NSW government proposes life sentences for murder plots

The New South Wales government has proposed new legislation to combat rising organized crime violence, including potential life sentences for those involved in murder plots. Under the proposed laws, aggravated offences for conspiracy and attempted murder would carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment, even if the intended killing does not occur.

The crackdown follows a surge in gang-related violence in Sydney, which recently resulted in the deaths of two innocent people during botched hits. Since May 2025, there have been five suspected cases of mistaken identity, raising concerns that overseas criminal leaders are driving reckless attacks.

Additionally, the reforms would allow children suspected of organized crime-linked public shootings or firebombings to be tried as adults, facing tougher penalties including life imprisonment. NSW Premier Chris Minns stated that the laws aim to target criminal networks at every level, from those who organize and facilitate violence online to those who carry it out.
