NSW Health expands donor milk access for premature babies

An expanded partnership between NSW Health and Australian Red Cross Lifeblood is set to increase access to pasteurised donor human milk for vulnerable premature babies across New South Wales. The expansion will extend the service to an additional 28 public hospitals throughout the state.

The Western NSW Local Health District is preparing to introduce the milk in Special Care nurseries located in Dubbo, Orange, and Bathurst. This move aims to provide greater equity for families in regional and rural areas, allowing them to remain closer to home rather than traveling to metropolitan hospitals to access donor milk services.

Since 2018, Lifeblood has supplied donor milk as an alternative for medically vulnerable infants when a mother’s own milk is insufficient or unavailable. Eligibility is subject to strict criteria, generally targeting babies born before 32 weeks, those weighing under 1500 grams, or those at high risk of medical complications associated with prematurity.
