NSW healthcare workers protest ban on remanufactured medical devices

Healthcare workers in New South Wales are challenging a ban by the Clinical Excellence Commission (CEC) on the use of remanufactured medical supplies. These eco-friendly products, which include tourniquets, compression sleeves, and patient transfer mattresses, are reprocessed from formerly single-use items and are already utilized in every other Australian state and territory.

The CEC has expressed concerns regarding infection control, traceability, and the potential for these materials to mislead medical professionals. However, clinicians and healthcare employees have argued that these concerns are not supported by evidence. Critics suggest the ban may favor multibillion-dollar manufacturers of disposable devices over sustainable alternatives, resulting in increased costs for taxpayers and higher volumes of medical waste in landfills.

Medsalv, a local third-party remanufacturing company, reported that its chief executive, Oliver Hunt, has sought clarification from the CEC for two years without significant engagement from the commission.
