NSW infrastructure and environmental restoration updates
Bayside Council is calling on the New South Wales government and Transport for NSW to commit to the rehabilitation and ecological restoration of Kings Wetland in Brighton. Following the opening of the M6 Active Transport Corridor, public interest in the heritage-listed site has increased, but the surrounding bushland requires significant weed management and bush regeneration. While the council is negotiating to manage the corridor itself, the responsibility for the surrounding land remains with Transport for NSW.
Separately, construction has reached a major milestone on the reinstatement of Mitchell’s Causeway. Crews have begun installing dozens of 900mm diameter piles using a 76-tonne drilling rig to support a new 120-metre bridge deck. This $200 million project, jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments, aims to restore two-way access on the Great Western Highway and provide an additional climbing lane at Victoria Pass. Work is expected to continue through the second quarter of 2027.
