NSW inquiry recommends moratorium on waste-to-energy projects
A New South Wales upper house select committee has released a report recommending a moratorium on proposed waste-to-energy facilities. Chaired by Nichole Overall, the committee's findings followed five hearings and more than 1,400 public submissions.
The report includes 22 recommendations, most notably calling for the rejection of Veolia’s $1.5 billion waste-to-energy proposal at the Woodlawn bioreactor and the Parkes energy recovery facility. The committee stated these plans should not proceed due to a lack of social licence and community acceptance.
Other recommendations include an independent, transparent review of how waste-to-energy precincts are selected and a significant increase in the share of the waste levy returned to local councils to cover infrastructure and road costs.
