NSW landlords largely support minimum energy efficiency standards
A survey by Energy Consumers Australia (ECA) reveals that three-quarters of landlords in New South Wales either support or do not oppose the introduction of minimum energy efficiency rental standards (MEERS). According to the data, 51% of the 500 landlords surveyed back the standards, while only 24% oppose them.
The proposed standards aim to ensure renters can heat and cool their homes efficiently, potentially saving them hundreds of dollars annually on energy bills. The ECA noted that nearly 70% of NSW renters currently avoid using heating or cooling to save money, and renters are twice as likely as homeowners to struggle with timely energy bill payments.
While landlords expressed concerns regarding the upfront costs of property upgrades, the NSW Government has introduced the Home Energy Saver Program, which offers 0% interest loans to assist with energy-related improvements.
