NSW launches bird flu vaccination program for vulnerable species

The New South Wales government has launched a targeted vaccination program to protect vulnerable bird species from H5 Avian Influenza. The initiative aims to safeguard both wild populations and captive “insurance” populations.

Taronga Conservation Society Australia is leading the vaccine trials. Initial cohorts receiving the two-dose course include Little Penguins from the Manly and Barunguba populations, as well as Carnaby’s Black Cockatoos and Red-tailed Black Cockatoos. The vaccination protocol requires two doses administered three to four weeks apart, followed by a 14-day monitoring period to identify any potential side effects.

NSW Premier Chris Minns stated that while the government cannot stop the spread of the virus, these programs are essential efforts to protect native bird populations. The government is collaborating with wildlife organizations to establish vaccination sites and ensure necessary infrastructure and oversight are in place.
