NSW mandates reporting of motor neurone disease cases

The New South Wales government has implemented mandatory reporting for motor neurone disease (MND), making it a notifiable disease effective 1 September. Health practitioners, including those in hospitals, laboratories, schools, and childcare facilities, are now required to notify NSW Health of all MND diagnoses.

This initiative aims to establish a robust evidence base to assist in healthcare planning and medical research. The data collected will include demographic and clinical details such as age, gender, address, occupation, and date of onset. This information is intended to help researchers identify patterns related to environmental exposures or specific locations.

The move is particularly significant for the Riverina region, where MND rates have historically been reported at approximately seven times the national average in areas like Wagga Wagga, Griffith, and Leeton. Advocates and health officials state that the data is essential to understanding why these clusters occur and to developing better treatments or preventive measures.
