NSW Minister warns prison wing closures could cost Labor Goulburn seat

State Health Minister Ryan Park visited Goulburn Base Hospital on July 29 and said the Labor Party will struggle to win the Goulburn seat in the next state election if two prison wings are shut down. The proposed closures would cut about 137 full‑time prison staff positions. Goulburn MP Wendy Tuckerman criticised the government’s consultation process, saying community concerns and union proposals were ignored. Park added that affected staff would be offered roles in other parts of Corrective Services and that the decision was presented as the best use of taxpayer funds, allegedly backed by an assessment overseen by the minister and Corrective Services. However, documents obtained by the opposition indicate no such assessment was conducted.
