NSW police investigate antisemitic slur at children's netball game in Maroubra
New South Wales police were called to Heffron Park in Maroubra on Saturday after a 42‑year‑old woman allegedly shouted antisemitic slurs, including “F--- the Jews,” at a Jewish under‑12 netball team playing Maccabi Netball Club against Saints Netball Club. Officers spoke to the woman and issued a move‑on direction while the investigation continues.
Community leaders and the clubs condemned the incident, describing it as “deeply distressing” and highlighting its impact on young Jewish players. The episode occurred as the Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion was hearing evidence in Sydney, underscoring broader concerns about rising antisemitism in Australian sport. A recent Maccabi survey found nearly half of respondents had witnessed or experienced antisemitism in sport, with a noted increase since October 7.
Maccabi Netball Club and Australian Jewish sport bodies are working with NSW Police and the Community Security Group to address the matter and ensure safe participation in community sport.
